Welcome to the Brierley Town Council Website.

Brierley town council works within the metropolitan borough of Barnsley. The villages of Brierley & Grimethorpe sit to the North East Area of the borough. At the last census in 2001 the population of the Council area was 14,200. This figure is increasing due to the large number of new build homes in the parishes.

The villages have a history which can be traced back to an early Saxon settlement. It is believed that the name Grimethorpe originates from "Grim's Torp", a mixture of Anglo-Saxon and Viking names, meaning a Torp or hamlet owned by a Viking named Grimey. The men of Brierley were called to Wooley Edge in  1588 to prepare for the coming Armada

Grimethorpe  is known for its past as a mining village, its brass band, the Grimethorpe Colliery Band and its location for the film Brassed Off - a black comedy which tells the plight of the village and the effect on its band.
